The Spaniard who last year became what is believed to be the oldest woman in the world to give birth has cancer, Britain's Daily Mail reports.

Maria del Carmen Bousada Lara gave birth by Cesarean section to twin boys on Dec. 29, 2006 — just seven days shy of her 67th birthday.

Her decision to have children using IVF treatment at such a late age sparked a worldwide debate and she later admitted to lying to a U.S. fertility clinic about her true age.

Despite her recent diagnosis, Bousada told a Spanish television station this week she does not fear for the care of her children.

"I have been presented with an illness, a very serious illness, one which is fashionable at the moment," she is quoted in the Daily Mail as saying.

"I am having treatment and that, but I'm well. The little ones are beautiful, very chubby, very big. At the moment I am still here. I have my family, the two children have their godfather.

"I have a girl who helps me look after the children. I am always there for them. I always have help. I'm not thinking about fear in my life at the moment but, of course, you never know," she added.

Last year, New Jersey resident Frieda Birnbaum, 60, became the oldest woman in the U.S. to give birth.
