3 Inmates Escape From Texas Jail, Attack Guards and Maintenance Worker

Wednesday, August 20, 2008

FORT WORTH, Texas —  Three inmates attempting to escape from the Tarrant County Jail on Wednesday morning injured two guards and a maintenance worker, authorities said.

The two correctional officers and the worker were taken by ambulance to the hospital. Another maintenance worker was treated at the scene and released. Their identities weren't immediately released.

Tarrant County Sheriff's spokesman Terry Grisham said the attacks happened about 8:30 a.m. when the two jailers were walking the inmates to a recreational area on the jail's top floor.

Authorities believe a shank was used in the assault on the guards.

The three inmates then ran toward the elevators, where two county maintenance workers were at the time. Both workers were attacked, Grisham said.

Other officers subdued the three inmates before they could get away.

One of the inmates was identified as Erick "Truman" Davila, a 21-year-old charged with capital murder in a shooting at a crowded birthday party the left a woman and her granddaughter dead. Davila is also charged with murder for the unrelated fatal shooting of a 37-year-old man.

The two other inmates were identified as James Dwayne Edwards, 24, who was being held on charges of aggravated robbery and evading arrest, and Herschel Jerome Hurd, who was being held on charges of aggravated robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm.
