Sean Avery: I'm Sorry for 'Sloppy Seconds' Comment

Thursday, December 04, 2008

In the wake of his suspension from the NHL, Hockey hell-raiser Sean Avery apologized for referring to his ex-girlfriends as "sloppy seconds" Wednesday.

“I would like to sincerely apologize for my off-color remarks,” Avery, 28, said. “I should not have made those comments and I recognize that they were inappropriate.

“It was a bad attempt to build excitement for the game, but I am now acutely aware of how hurtful my actions were.”

The Dallas Stars player’s crude comments came in a press conference Wednesday morning, when he told reporters, “It’s a common thing for NHL guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds.” While he didn’t directly refer to any specific person, his ex girlfriend Elisha Cuthbert, 26, is now dating Calgary defenseman Dion Phaneuf. Another ex girlfriend of Avery’s, Rachel Hunter, is now dating Los Angeles Kings star Jarret Stoll, People magazine reported.

He was later suspended indefinitely for making what the NHL commissioner called “inappropriate public comments, not pertaining to the game.”

"I caused unnecessary embarrassment to my peers as well as people I have been close with in the past," Avery – who interned at Vogue magazine last summer — says. "As many of you know, I like to mix it up on and off the ice from time to time, but understand that this time I took it too far."

Classy.
